Posted by Michael Fuchs
with 1150 hits

Thanks to my past publications in the broad field of Food Studies, I have been invited to participate in a lecture series on food as a topic in Cultural Studies, organized by the Center for Cultural Studies at the University of Graz. Not surprisingly, my presentation will focus on Hannibal and its spectacularization of food preparation, presentation, and consumption, but I'll also cover other cinematic and televisual texts. For a sketch of the presentation, click 'read more'.

with 1010 hits

Together with Stefan Brandt, I've organized a panel on animals in American TV for this year's Austrian Association for American Studies conference with the theme "America through the Small Screen: Television and Its Transformations." We'll occupy two slots, with 6 papers:

  • Stefan Brandt: "Political Animals: Mister Ed and the American Civil Rights Movement"
  • Alexa Weik von Mossner: "Anthropomorphism, Trans-Species Empathy, and Animal Characters in American Serial Television"
  • Brett Mills: "The Death and Resurrection of Brian Griffin"
  • Manuela Neuwirth: "The Alien Animal and the Human Alien: Anthropomorphizing the Extraterrestrial in ALF and Star Trek"
  • Dawn Keetley: "Sacrificial Animals and the Vanishing 'Human' in the Walking Dead Franchise"
  • Michael Fuchs: "'I have no taste for animal cruelty': Human Cannibalism and/as Animal Politics in Hannibal"

'Read more' will reveal the panel abstract and the abstract for my paper.
